We could never complete an Austin Restaurant website without at some point coming around to Waterloo Ice House. This group of restaurants have definitely played their roll in making Austin as wierd as it is. And if you haven't yet been to one of their locations for food or for live music, you probably aren't from 'round these parts.
Waterloo Ice House has been doing their thing since 1976, and had a hand in the early popularity of some great musicians. But of course it's not just the live music that made them what they are today. In Texas, Austin in particular prefers home-grown, down to earth restaurants where it's okay to walk in with shorts and flip flops, where they serve fantastic food at a reasonable price. Waterloo has always seemed to live up to those expectations. Whether you're looking for a great burger, soups or salads, sandwiches, spuds, catfish or even breakfast, you're likely to find something to please you.
There are now nine different locations around Austin, making them one of the restaurant "big-wigs" around town today. Each location is a little different from the next but the menus are basically the same. Our usual visits to the 'loo happen deeper into the heart of Austin, like the 38th and Medical location, but this time we dropped in to one of the newest spots... Avery Ranch.
A large hamburger with cheese, bacon and jalapenos served up with their hand cut fries is always a good choice. You know, this is one of those local burgers, better than fast food. Just a great burger (never frozen) that's big enough to leave you feeling like you won't need to eat again anytime soon.
We love a good appetizer as well, and here's a recommendation for anybody. Well, anybody who likes stuffed jalepenos. These aren't your average stuffed jalapenos though. These hand breaded jalapenos are stuffed with jack, cheddar and cream cheese, and as if that wasn't enough they're loaded further with spanish rice and chicken. Having tried appetizers with the same name at numerous places, it's safe to say this is one of the best available. They're packed with flavor and leave you wanting a second order.
One of their more popular menu items is the Waterloo Salad, which is a hearty salad loaded with grilled chicken, bacon, blue cheese, toasted pecans and apples, then topped with an apple cider vinaigrette. We love the blend of flavors on this one. Another favorite and also a favorite of ours is the Ranch House Chicken. A grilled chicken breast topped with love, by that of course we mean bacon, mushrooms, onions, peppers, then covered with savory, melted jack cheese. (You gotta try this!) Tasty.
There's plenty on the menu to keep the veggie lovers happy while still keeping the meat-atarians pleased. At this particular location we even saw a create your own lunch deal... for six bucks you get to choose the entree, sides and salads. If you're pinchin' you pennies or your spare tire that's a pretty good deal.
Waterloo Ice Houses have full bars, patio dining and some have live music. This is what Austin is all about. If you're new to town, you'll need to experience this before you can claim to be an Austinite. Enjoy.
