Scholz Garten Austinwebsite    menu

Here's a place where you can get some true Austin tradition...  Scholz Garten on San Jacinto about 1 block north of 15th street.  It is the oldest restaurant, bar and banquet facility in Austin.  According to the history section on their website, Scholz Garten was built in 1866 by August Scholz, who ran the place until 1891.  This unique tavern and cafe became a traditional celebration spot after Longhorn games and was sold to a brewery company in 1893.  The first year the Longhorn football team ever went undefeated.

Today Scholz Garten carries on the tradition of food, beer, music and good times.  This place is all about the good times.  The party is at Scholz Garten.  Being located right in the heart of Austin and the college area... kids of all ages come to enjoy the atmosphere and food.  And don't be surpised if you find yourself in a sea of burnt orange.

The menu covers a bit of ground.  You can go for the German dishes, like the Jägerschnitzel, which is lightly breaded pork loin with a mushroom gravy.  We absolutely love this dish including the sides of Red Cabbage and German Potatoes.  We recommend that you try it as well.  There are a number of other German dishes available, as well as German Beers to go hand in hand with dinner.

It's also a great place for a little BBQ.  Brisket, Turkey, Chicken and Sausage... Face it, we do live in Texas.  BBQ is pretty much required here, especially when it's game time.

Plus, they make sandwiches (even a PO BOY), burgers, Jambalaya, Vegetable plates, and rock solid appetizers like the Basket of Onion Rings.  Don't know what they use in the batter, but the onion rings had a terrific flavor, and should be ordered with any meal.

Scholz Garten also has a banquet hall and a large patio area, where the live music and good times get going.  We would recommend this place for anyone having a party of any kind.  Bring the kids (in 1967 it was named an official Texas Historical Landmark), where else could you teach the kiddies a little history, while enjoying a frosty cold brew from a Biergarten?  Enjoy.
