At the 5th Street location you'll find a large covered patio dining area that makes a great place to go hang out with all of your "weird" Austin friends, for drinks and some good ol' Tex-Mex. Don't worry about how hot it is outside, they have huge fans to keep you cool. This place is most definitely casual, with a large following of college students and downtown traffic drawn in by the semi-famous marquis messages outside. But whether you go to the downtown location or the west Austin spot, the Tex-Mex and good times will keep you coming back.
They had our attention right off the bat with the Shrimp Diablo, a delightful appetizer of six large butterflied shrimp, stuffed with jalapeno, bacon wrapped and smoked. (It comes with chipotle and queso.) We do generally favor food including shrimp and or spicy, but both makes it a sure winner. Speaking of a little spicy, the Chipotle Chicken is also a good choice for your meal at El Arroyo.
They carry a number of traditional Tex-Mex dishes and more like, Shrimp Cielo or (heaven shrimp), Tequila Chicken, Burgers, Cozumel Dinner, even light and heart healthy choices like Pescado Fresco (loved those Borracho Beans on the side), Stuffed Zucchini or Skinny Tacos. (which we have heard good things about) They also have a weekend breakfast menu that has several choices of omelets and even a "Build your own omelet" deal. Plus... Migas, breakfast tacos, and pancakes.
And with everybody spending larger and larger amounts of money at the gas pumps and grocery stores these days, the prices at El Arroyo are more attractive than ever. So you can go out, have a little fun and some great food, and still afford the gas to get back home. See ya there.
