New Licha's Cantina Opens on East 6th

Licha's Cantina East 6th StreetThe new restaurant features Mexican food on East 6th in the former Papi Tino's location...  The hours only include Tuesdays through Saturdays from 4pm till 2am.  A quote from the Chronicle "Longtime San Antonio and Austin hospitality professional Daniel Brooks (Vespaio, Mettle) has left his position as general manager at Mettle to begin creating Licha's Cantina (1306 E. Sixth) in the cottage that was formerly home to Papi Tino's. His business partner in this endeavor is Claude Benayoun. They'll maintain the inviting Mexican cantina vibe with decor and a selection of quality tequilas, mezcals, and sotols as well as fruit infusions made with those Mexican liquors, plus beer and good cocktails. Brooks says the menu will feature his version of the street food of his native Mexico City with small plates of appetizers in the $6-8 range and heartier cazuelas (casseroles) for $10-15."

Attention Gluten Free Diners: This Pizza Works!

Gluten Free Pizza AustinWe stopped by EZ's Brick Oven and Grill in Central Austin yesterday.  We've been there many times over the years and always love their burgers.  Yesterday was a little test of their Gluten Free pizza.  Having some of our Dining512 tipsters tell us that the Margherita Pizza was awesome, we decided to try it without that pesky wheat that has become a problem for so many people in the last few years.  That includes some who are closest to us.

Having some experience on the subject, diners looking for good gluten free options in Austin's Restaurant scene used to be a pain in the backside.  Most times the gluten free items were just missing the mark on actually being good food.  Now, with a higher awareness among restaurateurs, the choices have gotten much better.  So, with love and care for our closest and the tons of others suffering from wheat allergies, we've decided to do a little more checking on this.  full article»

Zack's: Amazing Food and Kid Friendly (New Video)

Zack's American Bistro Austin RestaurantDining512 filmed at one of the newer restaurants in AustinZack's American Bistro in Steiner Ranch. We dropped by Zack's American Bistro at the front of Steiner Ranch on a Thursday afternoon, and one of the first things you notice upon entering the restaurant is the aroma of great food.  It's always nice to smell how good the food is going to be, as it's teasing you during the anticipation.  Once the food arrived to the table...  Wow!  This place really has it goin' on.

The atmosphere is very comfortable, family friendly including an attached playground for the kids, which they all seem to be very happy about.  They offer a full bar and some gluten free items.

One of their signature dishes, the Zack's Chicken, this perfectly cooked airline cut chicken is topped with sautéed mushrooms, roasted garlic, sun dried tomatoes served on their smashed potatoes with fresh green beans and a Parmesan Crisp.  Everything was...

The Dojo: First Ever Japanese Izakaya in Austin

The Dojo AustinThe new Japanese Izakaya Restaurant recently opened at the corner of Burnet Rd and Research Blvd. in North Austin, a spot formerly held by Austin's Benihana.  With Benihana gone, it looks like The Dojo (the first ever Izakaya in Austin is filling in a needed replacement for North Austin diners looking for that Japanese food fix.

A quote by Adie Bui from The Dojo:  "We recently opened and would love to get our name to the Austin consumers.  We are the 1st Japanese Izakaya in Austin. Izakaya is growing in popularity in the major cities, such as LA, SF, NY, etc., we offered a unique menu, tapas share-able plates. In addition to our regular Izakaya menu, we offered Ramen, a large Vegan Menu as well as our own infused flavored Sake, and special cocktails using our infused Sake. We are opened late night."

What is Izakaya?  According to their website, "The Japanese Izakaya is both a bar and a restaurant, a form of common casual dining popular amongst Japanese culture. Intended to be a place to hang out and share food and drinks while catching up with friends and family, the Izakaya offers a social environment for group gatherings.
The Izakaya style of food tends to be towards smaller plates… meant to be shared. This allows for a slower dining experience, much like the Spanish “tapas” style common in Europe.

Food is normally ordered slowly, over several courses… rather than coming to the table all at once. For the best food experience possible, the kitchen tends to deliver the food as it is ready… not in formalized “courses” that’s common in Western cultures. Again, the essence of the Izakaya is to provide a comfortable and SOCIAL experience, supported by sharing small plates and multiple courses of various flavors and dishes among the patrons.  Visit

Crave Coming to Austin in February

Crave Restaurant Coming to Austin
Crave a restaurant based out of Minneapolis is planning to open a restaurant in Downtown Austin this month.  The restaurant will settle in as yet another one of our 2nd Street district hot spots, featuring steaks, sushi, soups, sandwiches, pastas, chicken dishes and other seafood.

Previous Roaring Fork Chef Frank Johnson will take the reins as they look to make a splash in Austin's ever growing restaurant scene.  And from other reports we've seen he'll be tying out some additions to the local menus that have more of an "Austin Feel".

They already have several locations including Minneapolis, Florida, Ohio and Nebraska, and are now planning to give Austin a try.  They'll have lots to compete with here.  Austin has recently become the spot for celebrity chefs who's popularity has started to put us on the map as a true foodie town.

Judging from some of the other locations, you can expect to see Happy Hour specials, Brunches and live music.  They do accept reservations, and a brand new venue might be just what you're looking for when searching for a place to eat on Valentine's Day as well.  The new spot will be  340 E. 2nd St.  Austin, TX 78701.  Want to learn more...  Crave Austin Website»  (Picture from Crave Website)

Amazing New Burger at Zack's American Bistro in Austin

Dining512 filmed at one of the newer restaurants in AustinZack's American Bistro last night in Steiner Ranch.  This place features wood fired pizzas, gourmet burgers, sandwiches, salads and more.  We love to walk into a restaurant where the food instantly lets your smell sense know that what you're about to eat is going to be amazing.  This is one of those places.

We shot video of course and the final edit will be coming soon, but the family friendly place was teaming with happy families.  The kids all wanted to participate in the video and let us know how much they enjoy coming to Zack's to eat and especially take advantage of the large attached playground.  Impressive food, drinks and fun.  Stay tuned for more information about the food and our video with customers in the restauant.  This is one place you are going to want to try for yourself.

Exclusive (Reservation Only) Tequila Dinner at Hecho en Mexico in South Austin

Tequila Dinner at Hecho en Mexico South AustinLast night we were privileged to attend one of Hecho en Mexico's once a month exclusive, reservation only Tequila Dinners (in South Austin) that focus on a different brand each time.  The restaurant actually closes their doors to the public at 5pm on the last Wednesday of each month to put on the events.  The multiple course dinners prepared for this event, feature dishes that aren't usually available on their regular menu and each course is created to compliment the different drink served.

Last nights event was featured around the latest Tequila being launched in Austin...  Heroe De Leon.  The founder of this new Tequila was also in attendance and introduced his product, along with the great story behind it.  The place was packed and the food and drinks were great!  If you're interested in attending one of these dinners, you have to be EARLY.  They usually sell out of space by the beginning of the month.  If you want to find out more about when and where...  Check out Hecho en Mexico on facebook.
